Safety Tips

As daylight hours increase it is tempting to think that your visibility is also increasing. Don’t assume that motorists can see you. Many bicycle crashes involve other vehicles hitting the cyclist from behind, often through failure to see cyclists during changing light conditions such as dawn and dusk (source: VirtualBike).

Bright coloured clothing, front and rear lights and reflective strips are a great way to be seen from all angles, especially in low light conditions.

Cycling News

Following the tragic death of a 33 year old female cyclist in Melbourne’s CBD, the City of Melbourne has agreed that by 24 November the city’s tour bus terminal will temporarily relocate to the east side of St Kilda Road, south of Princes Bridge (adjacent to Alexandra Gardens), moving from it’s current Swanston Street location. Swanston Street is used by an estimated 4,000 cyclists each day, making it Australia’s busiest bike route, but it does not have dedicated bike paths.

The Council’s long term plan is to relocate the tour bus stops to Bourke Street, adjacent to the Southern Cross 2 tower buildings, following completion of the second tower in 2009. However, due to the recent fatality involving a tour bus, the interim measure has been implemented to ensure that cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users are not involved in a similar situation.
